Who We Are

"Around Thanksgiving, my mom called me and asked if she should set an extra place for someone I’m bringing,” Matt recalls. “In that moment I realized how great it would be to have an answer for her that didn’t require me to actually be dating someone.”

Invisible Girlfriend and Invisible Boyfriend are the result of one man’s frustration, and a little bit of desperation. Co-founder Matt Homann was newly divorced and tired of feeling pressured to jump into something new. "Around Thanksgiving, my mom called me and asked if she should set an extra place for someone I’m bringing,” Matt recalls. “In that moment I realized how great it would be to have an answer for her that didn’t require me to actually be dating someone.”

He figured he wasn't alone in that, and Invisible Girlfriend and Invisible Boyfriend was born.

When Matt pitched the idea at St. Louis' Startup Weekend in 2013, it won. A team of five strangers was assembled. Within 3 days we were on Buzzfeed, and the day after that we were on Business Insider. We didn’t have a product yet, but people were already talking about it. It was clear we had a compelling idea. In the last year we’ve had half a million visitors to our website, from 193 different countries.

We believe the Invisible Partner concept meets a universal problem. Society puts so much pressure on your relationship status. From Grandma to coworkers to romantic comedies, everyone seems to expect us to pursue a relationship. But sometimes you don’t want to be in one. We think that’s totally normal.

Even when you do want to be in a relationship, life doesn’t get any easier. Dating sucks. We’re excited about the ways Invisible Girlfriend and Boyfriend are helping people navigate the dating scene. The service creates a safe space for you to practice texting with a real human if you’re out of practice. Sometimes it even inspires just enough jealousy to jolt that special person into committing.

Our daily grind consists of tweaking and perfecting our service to meet this global need. We are a group of developers, designers, and writers with an office at T-REX in Downtown St. Louis. Questions? We’d love to hear from you.
