Why your AI girlfriend forgets everything, and what good memory actually looks like
A plain explanation of context windows, why the fix is not "a bigger model", and how to test memory in two minutes.
The most common complaint about these apps is that she forgets. You tell her about your job on Monday and on Friday she asks what you do. It feels like carelessness. It is usually architecture.
The short versi
A language model does not remember anything between messages. Every reply is generated by handing the model a block of text — the system prompt, some history, your message — and reading what comes back. That block has a size limit. When your conversation grows past it, something has to be dropped, and the oldest material goes first.
So an app with no memory system is not forgetting. It never knew. The information simply fell out of the block.
Why "use a bigger model" is not the answer
Larger context windows help and they do not solve it. Two reasons. Cost, because you pay per unit of text on every single message, so carrying a year of conversation into every reply is ruinous. And attention, because a detail buried in an enormous block of text gets less weight than one placed deliberately — a model handed everything often uses the wrong thing.
What a real memory system does
It decides what is worth keeping. Facts about you that stay true, a summary of what has happened, and what has been said recently, each stored separately and pulled back in when relevant. The skill is in what gets thrown away, not what gets kept.
How to test it in two minutes
Tell her something specific and slightly unusual — not "I like football" but "my sister's dog is called Biscuit and he is terrified of the hoover". Leave it a day. Come back and say "the hoover thing happened again". If she knows what you mean, there is a memory system. If she asks what you are talking about, there is not, however smooth the reply.
One honest caveat
Memory makes a companion feel enormously more real and it also makes her wrong more visibly. A companion who remembers will occasionally remember something slightly askew, and that lands worse than forgetting, because a person who misremembers your sister's dog is odder than one who never knew.
